  • And... I am still happy using this technology
  • The only thing I'm considering atm is using also some other wiki software, see wikis. It's fascinating to have a wiki in just a single file or in several files (without need of a database + possibility to sync offline editing very easy).
    • One try with Dokuwiki failed unfortunately, see link below

personal aspects with wikis

the version system is for me the most important aspect, since probably all other aspects also exist in one form or the other in other software

version system

  • one can reconstruct later on thoughts (evolving)
    • though there are factors which make this harder, since I've had bad experiences with losing data because of not saving early enough :-(
  • exact time: normally when thinking of past, it gets "blurry", one has not so much the exact time associated + then probably leaving out things start (not only since humans tend to categorize to have easier access)

openness

  • unfortunately machines have proven that opening a wiki to the public is a task which costs people more time to clean up, so I do not allow public edits anymore + review each registration request
  • another thought: big applause for all the WMF wiki editors who help guarantee wikis stay "clean"
  • edit button: is for me a symbol of: how easy it is to make something appear as improvable. Nothing is perfect + there are always things which come to mind due to new context

learning

  • my major usage of tools for this aspect over the years is: chat + wikis
    • see further thoughts in WikiNode: basically since I use wikis to collect my learning results, I currently have the opinion wikis + chats are "good enough"
  • interestingly multimedia tools have become less
    • I explained it like this (a few weeks ago to someone):
the more multimedia (synchronity?) is involved the more time I lose (losing sounds bad now, but well...)
if you want to utilize tools for learning one should also keep in mind that not all "learners" are on same level (which?) + that means people have to "wait"
of course: one should see it from all sides, so multimedia is definitely a nice thing
    • another thought: maybe this is too much dependent on Wikiversity?
